The Palo Alto Sessions $11.98 This disc reissues Dianne Reeves’ entire 1982 LP Welcome to My Love, plus three tracks from 1985’s For Every Heart and one selection from her days as a vocalist with the band Caldera. It contains the first recorded version of her classic “Better Days” and one of the best renditions of the overworked standard “My Funny Valentine” as you’re likely to hear. On Welcome, Reeves was exploring the jazz/R&B territory she would claim as her own a decade later. “For Every Heart” was much more commercial, but the three cuts chosen here are worthwhile, especially a duet with Jon Lucien, “Separate Vacations.” ~ Frank Federico, All Music GuidePerformers: Eduardo del Barrio – Moog Synthesizer, Oberheim, Piano, Piano (Electric), Synthesizer; Hector Andrade – Conga, Percussion, Timbales; Michael Azevedo – Conga, Percussion; Billy Carroll – Bass (Electric); Dean Cortez – Bass (Electric); Linda Lipsett – Viola; Nancy Stein – Cello; Barbara Thomason – Viola; Jon Bonine – Trombone; Dan Carillo – Guitar; Billy Childs – Piano, Synthesizer; Neil Clarke – Percussion; Jeremy Cohen – Violin; Luis Conte – Percussion; Richard Cummings – Keyboards; Charlie Davis – Trumpet; Kenwood Dennard – Drum |

Palo Alto – Widescreen $9.99 Four college freshman who have returned home for Thanksgiving break find that the old adage about absence making the heart grow fonder rings true in director Brad Leong’s nostalgic comedy drama. Back home for the first time since they set out for college, a small group of lifelong friends realize just how much their small hometown really means to them as they reminisce about the days gone by, and make a few more memories before heading back to school. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide |
